Fibre Optic Visual Fault Locators

Continuity Checkers and Circuit Identifiers

Do You need to identify which fibre is which in a bundle - or check there is optical continuity ?

Tech Optics offers the choice of 3 different Visual Fault Locators to suit user preferences:
Each VFL operates at a visible red wavelength and is packaged differently

Westover FFL-100

Westover's Visual Fault Locator (VFL) is a ruggedised, hand held tool used to locate bends, breaks, or damages in fibre optic cable and for fibre circuit identification. The device is 22cm in length and includes a carrying case, 1.25mm adapter and 2 AA batteries, which will operate the VFL for over 80 hours of continuous use.

The VFL is equipped with a standard 2.5mm interface for use with common connectors (SC, ST, FC), while the 1.25mm adapter (included) enables use with small form factor connectors (LC, MU).

Westover's VFL includes a 650nm wavelength Class 2 laser with a maximum output power of 1.0mW for up to 4km for singlemode and 3km for multimode applications in either continuous or flashing modes.

AFS OS405

The OS405 (635nm) visible laser cable fault locator allows the operator to find faults in fibre optic cables, even in the OTDR dead zone, optimising splices and tracing fibres. By injecting a bright red visible light in the fibre, locations of losses such as breaks, bends, or bad connectors can be detected visually, even through the typical yellow or orange jacket used on most single fibre cables. Fibres can be traced as far as 4 km (2.5 miles.) using this instrument. The OS405 uses a visible diode laser in the compact case for pocket size convenience.
Wavelength of operation 635nm
Modulation frequency 1Hz
Stability, 1 hour <0.5dB
Power output 1mW maximum
Connector interface ST, SC or FC
Power 2 AA batteries or AC adaptor
Enclosure size Compact Handheld (L-12.5cm/W-7cm/H-3cm)
Operating temperature -10°C to +50°C
Storage temperature -20°C to +60°C

Fiberpoint 125 and Fiberpoint 250
Visual Fault Locators are used to check singlemode and multimode optical fibres and other fibre optic components for faults or to find the right fibre in a bundle of fibres. Fibre Optic Fault Locators are available in two versions:
• Fiberpoint 250 ( for fibre optic connectors with 2.5mm ferrules— E2000, FC, SC, ST)
• Fiberpoint 125 ( for Small-Form-Factor- Connectors with 1.25mm ferrules—LC, MU)
Both models are made with a patented universal connector adaptor. Most connectors, with the appropriate ferrule diameter, can be used. The operating wavelength is 635nm, visible red. The optical power output is less than 1 mW according to Laser Class 2 (IEC 825-2) so no additional safety requirements are necessary. The small compact and handy design is very suitable for the daily use in all fibre optic applications in the field as well as in the laboratory.
